Lesson 021
Who Is a Bàálẹ̀? A Leader Close to the People
Ẹ káàbọ̀ sí Omolola TalksTV Yàrá Ìkẹ́kọ̀ọ́.
In our last lesson, we introduced three respected Yoruba titles—Bàálẹ̀, Mogaji and Aare.
Today, let us begin with the first one.
Who is a Bàálẹ̀?
If you ask different Yoruba people this question, some will simply reply,
"A Bàálẹ̀ is the head of a village."
That answer is a good starting point, but there is more to understand.
More Than a Village Head
Traditionally, a Bàálẹ̀ is a recognised community leader who oversees the affairs of a town, village or settlement, usually under the authority of a higher traditional ruler.
The exact responsibilities may differ from one kingdom to another, but one thing remains common.
A Bàálẹ̀ is expected to serve the people.
He is expected to help maintain peace, promote development, and represent the interests of the community.
In many places, the Bàálẹ̀ serves as a bridge between the people and the traditional kingdom to which the community belongs.
Leadership Is Service
Sometimes, when people hear traditional titles, they think only about honour.
Our ancestors thought differently.
To them, leadership meant responsibility.
The respect given to a Bàálẹ̀ was expected to match the service he rendered to the community.
That is why the title has remained relevant for generations.
What Can We Learn Today?
Whether or not we hold a traditional title, there is a lesson for all of us.
True leadership is not measured by how many people greet you.
It is measured by how many people are better because you served them well.
That lesson remains timeless.
Classroom Question
