OMOLOLA TALKSTV YÀRÁ ÌKẸ́KỌ̀Ọ́
BÀÁLẸ̀, MOGAJI & AARE
Welcome back to Omolola TalksTV Yàrá Ìkẹ́kọ̀ọ́!
It's been a few days since we last gathered in our classroom, and I'm delighted to welcome you back.
I hope you've been keeping well.
Today, we begin Module 4, and trust me, it's another interesting and thought-provoking lesson.
So, find a comfortable place to sit, grab a cup of tea or coffee if you like, and let's learn something new together.
As always, our goal is simple: to preserve our language, understand our culture, and appreciate the wisdom our ancestors left behind.
Class is now in session.

Module 4: BÀÁLẸ̀, MOGAJI & AARE
Lesson 020
Bàálẹ̀, Mogaji and Aare: Why Do We Often Confuse These Titles?
Ẹ káàbọ̀ sí Omolola TalksTV Yàrá Ìkẹ́kọ̀ọ́.
Have you ever attended a traditional ceremony and heard different titles being mentioned one after another?
Someone says,
"The Bàálẹ̀ has arrived."
A few minutes later another person announces,
"Please welcome the Mogaji."
Then someone whispers,
"The Aare is also on his way."
If you are hearing these titles for the first time, you may quietly ask yourself,
"Who are these people? Are they all chiefs? Do they perform the same role?"
To be honest, many Yoruba people have asked the same questions.
Some people use these titles interchangeably.
Others know the titles but do not know what each one represents.
That is why we are taking time to learn them one after another.
Every Title Has a Story
One of the things I admire most about Yoruba culture is that our ancestors did not create titles simply to decorate people.
Every title carried a responsibility.
Every title served a purpose.
Every title helped to organise society.
When we understand these titles, we are not only learning new words.
We are learning how Yoruba communities were organised long before modern government existed.
That, to me, is one of the beautiful things about our history.
What Should We Expect in This Module?
In this module, we shall discover:
Who is a Bàálẹ̀?
Who is a Mogaji?
Who is an Aare?
Why do people often confuse these titles?
What responsibilities come with each of them?
By the end of this module, I hope you will no longer hear these titles without understanding what they represent.
Classroom Question
Before we continue, tell us:
Which of these three titles have you heard most often—Bàálẹ̀, Mogaji or Aare?
We would love to hear your experience.
Editor's Note
The meaning and responsibilities attached to traditional Yoruba titles may vary from one kingdom to another. This lesson presents the most widely accepted understanding while respectfully acknowledging those differences.
